Best for the world
“Our goal is to be in the top 10% of B Corps in the world”, says Anneke, our Manager Impact Investment, Partnerships & Education. Together with Paul, Niels, Caitlin, Sabine and Laurens she makes up the Dopper B Corp team. The team that’s been working on our latest B Impact Assessment for nearly a year –on top of all their other plastic pollution-fighting work. They’ve been digging deep into our business to record the social and environmental impact of everything Dopper does. With the goal of proving that this year, we deserve a spot in the Best for the World category. And that we measure up to our (not so) secret B Corp crush Patagonia. #lifegoals
Environment
One of the B Corp assessment areas we hope to make a splash in this year is ‘environment’. In 2020 Dopper became the first sustainable bottle range in the world that’s Cradle to Cradle Certified™. The Dopper Original (Silver level), Steel, Insulated and Glass (Bronze level) –all of them meet strict requirements when it comes to material health, material reutilisation, renewable energy, water stewardship and social fairness. Yes, we’re pretty impressed ourselves. Naturally, adhering to this golden standard of safe, circular and responsible products improves our positive impact –and our B Corp score with it.
Resource conservation
Our company vision is a world with crystal clear waters. Where plastic pollution is a thing of the past and everyone near and far has access to safe drinking water. Each Dopper bottle sold gets us a little closer to that goal. But it’s also a consumer product, made using raw materials. In the spirit of not depleting the earth’s resources, we’ve chosen a design and materials that make Dopper bottles fully recyclable. But we’d like to go even further. The next step we’re working on is to create a take-back strategy in which we take our responsibility as a producer for the end of life of our product.
Business goals
We realise some of this might read like a bit of a box-ticking exercise. But being a B Corporation isn’t a trivial stamp of approval. It’s the strategic framework for our business. If you were to look closely at Dopper’s governing documents (emphasis on the if), you’d read that one of Dopper's objectives is to ‘have a significantly positive impact on society and the environment’. In practice, that means we consider how our decisions affect all our stakeholders. From the people gathering raw materials to the people involved in the end-of-life process –all business decisions must take into account anyone impacted by our operations.
Improving our B Impact Score
As you can see, since our last recertification in 2018 we’ve hit some serious milestones that should impact our new impact score (we’ll stop saying impact now). Plus, we laid the groundwork for some more. What score we’re aiming for? Since the B Corp community is ever-growing and scores fluctuate, we don’t know exactly what score would land us in the top 10%. What we do know is that we’re currently on 101.8 out of a possible 200 points. So that’s the one to beat.
March is B Corp Month.
