In 2023, the Dopper Original became the world’s first and only bottle collection to achieve Cradle to Cradle Certified® Gold. Officially making it the most sustainable reusable water bottle collection. On. The. Planet. You’d think we’re exaggerating, but we’re not. Achieving Cradle to Cradle Certified® Gold means our Dopper Original bottles were assessed on many (many) points across five categories. And passed every single one.

The certification is proof that from design to end of life, every Dopper bottle is made with the highest regard for the planet. From colour pigments to employee commuting, from water usage to worker’s rights, and from energy use to packaging, every last detail meets the toughest sustainability standards. Ready for a circular economy in which waste does not exist and materials are endlessly reused. 

Inspired by nature

Being Cradle to Cradle Certified® means we have extensive insight in the chain of our products: we know what goes in our products, in which circumstances they are made, and of course what happens with the resources at the end of life of our product. It means that we use a sustainable design strategy that mimics the regenerative cycle of nature in which waste is reused. Nature doesn’t know the concept of waste, and that is exactly what we’re aiming for.

Designed to last

We started riding the Cradle to Cradle Certified® wave way before our Original first got certified (Bronze) back in 2014. When Merijn founded the company, he figured a product cannot truly be innovative if it causes harm to the planet or people. In fact, the whole purpose of Dopper was and still is to make our world’s waters crystal clear, in every ocean and from every tap. Therefore, our bottles are designed to last a looong time, and are made with 100% safe and recyclable materials.

Reaching Cradle to Cradle Certified® Gold for the Dopper Original is the latest in our growing list of Cradle to Cradle Certified® achievements. Don’t know what we’re talking about? Let us remind you:

• In 2023, the Dopper Original became world's first bottle collection to achieve Cradle to Cradle Certified® Gold.
• In 2022, we became the first and only company to have our full assortment (incl. accessories) Cradle to Cradle Certified®. 
• In 2020, we were the first and only company to have its complete bottle range Cradle to Cradle Certified®.  
• In 2014, the Dopper Original was the first reusable water bottle in the world to become Cradle to Cradle Certified® (Bronze level).  
• Our accessories are currently Cradle to Cradle Certified® Silver, while the Dopper Insulated, Steel and Glass are Bronze. 

How to become Cradle to Cradle Certified®

So, how do you get Cradle to Cradle Certified®? It’s a pretty rigorous process. To give you a bit of an idea, these are the five categories our bottles were scored on:

• Material Health: Every component, down to the very last molecule, is checked for its impact on human and environmental health. At Dopper, all our products are free from BPA and other toxins.
• Product circularity: Dopper bottles can be disassembled by consumers into components made of only one material. This ensures better quality recycling and home repair. 
• Clean Air & Climate Protection: This category promotes carbon neutrality and the use of 100% renewable energy. The Dopper Original factory already runs on 100% renewable energy.
• Water & Soil Stewardship: The water used for the Dopper Original production is kept in a closed loop and is not discharged into the environment. 
• Social Fairness: The production complies with the strictest international labour agreements. Everyone working for and with Dopper does so in fair working conditions. Not just at the office, but also in our factories.

Next steps

With a Cradle to Cradle certification for our full product range, all our products are tried and tested to fit in a circular economy. Showing the industry what’s already possible. Extra cool: with the certification, the Dopper Glass, Dopper Insulated and Dopper Steel have become part of a very select group, because only a few Cradle to Cradle Certified® products are sourced in China. So, hats off to our production partners there, for taking on and succeeding in this sustainability challenge with us.
